New Youth Parliament

About us

Since 2013, the Commission for Youth have been organising the Youth Parliament, be it one of the main activity of the Youth services. Since September 2022; the New Youth Parliament encourage youths to be more present in regions and in the Rodrigues Regional Assembly as well.

The activity will comprise of several parliamentary sessions at the Rodrigues Regional Assembly. Also, Young parliamentarians will go in several villages to make sensitisation and talks with youths about the Rodrigues Regional Assembly. A service of ‘proximité’ with youths will be encouraged.

Details of the activity
  • An election is made at regional level in Youth centres, where 2 youths will be elected from the various registered candidates. All youth in Rodrigues aged 14 to 35 are allowed to vote for two representatives in their respective region.
  • The composition of the Rodrigues Youth Parliament will be made of 12 elected members (2 per region), 5 members from the Rodrigues Regional Youth Council and 4 outstanding youths. A Rodrigues Youth Parliament Executive Council will be formed accordingly.
  • Office of Youth Parliament will be held for one year instead of one day
  • Youth are expected to work with their peers at grassroots – on achievement of goals (resolutions) of Action Plan
  • Sitting at the end of the year of service to report on achievements (Full sitting including PQs, Motions)
Objectives

  • The Youth parliament allows young people to learn how to participate in decision- making process and how to formulate policies. The aims of the activity are as per below:

    • Develop the leadership, diplomatic and professional skills among youths in Rodrigues
    • Promote the exchange of ideas and experiences between the youth of different age groups
    • Promote tolerance, understanding, solidarity and cooperation among the youth
    • Encourage participation of young men and women in the development in Rodrigues
    • Raise awareness of maximum youths about the nature of work of the Rodrigues Regional Assembly.
    • Allows the Youths to develop new project in their respective region and in this instance benefit the youth services and all Rodriguan youths.
    • Training on the functioning of the Rodrigues Regional Assembly for the Youth Parliament Members
