About Us

The aim of the La Croisée Adolescent Health & Youth Counselling Centre is to promote the health and well-being of young people aged 14- 35 years (10-24 years for UNFPA activities) in Rodrigues, with emphasis on the physical, psychological, emotional and environmental factors affecting their health. The centre offers a comprehensive range of professional services and programmes.

It also serves as a resource and training centre for those working with young people. The centre is committed to the provision of an environment which is accessible, confidential, and safe, where the young people are valued and listened to.

Services Provided

The Croisée Adolescent Health & Youth Counselling Centre offers an integrated, multi-disciplinary range of health services, creative arts and recreational programmes. These include

  • Medical service,
  • Health education and promotion programmes
  • Reproductive Health services
  • Counselling and support
  • Recreational and creative arts programmes
  • Peer leaders and Counselling projects
  • Resources and training for those working with adolescents/youths
Target Groups

The Croisée Adolescent Health & Youth Counselling Centre provides services and activities to all young people aged 10-35 yrs. In particular, the centre attempts to address the needs of the following disadvantaged groups:

  • Adolescent mothers
  • Out-of-school youths
  • Adolescent couples
  • Those involved in high-risked behaviours
  • Those with low-literacy
  • Unemployed youths
  • Isolated young people
Objectives

Counseling Services

The centre provides counselling and support to individual young people in areas such as:

  • Family problems
  • Drugs or alcohol problems
  • Relationships
  • Unemployment
  • Mental Health
  • Self esteem

 The centre also provides : 

  • Counselling to young people and young couples in the areas of Reproductive and Sexual Health and Family Life
  • Counselling where appropriate, to families and parents experiencing difficulties with their children
  • Group-counselling programmes to young people experiencing difficulties in areas such as:
    • Self-esteem
    • Inter-personal skills
    • Alcohol/drugs
  • Assist young people and parents in understanding the range of physical, psychological and emotional changes occurring in adolescence and to develop skills for improving relationships between parents and young people
  • Provides supports and counselling to young people who are disadvantaged because of low-literacy, unemployment and social isolation

Primary Health Care 

The centre will provide:

  • Weekly medical clinic, providing general health care and check-ups to young people. 
  • Basic nursing care and treatment facilities 
  • Basic Reproductive health care and treatment 

Health Promotion and Education 

The centre will provide: 

  • Accurate information to young people on Health and social issues
  • Positive health and well-being promotion among young people by offering health education programmes, resource materials, and advice on topics such as:
    • Nutrition 
    • Hygiene 
    • Environment 
    • Drug Abuse 
    • Sexual and Reproductive health 
    • Skills in preventive health and promote responsible behaviours in areas such as smoking, drug abuse and sexuality
  • Support single mothers and young couples in developing appropriate parenting skills, self-esteem ad life skills
  •  Develop appropriate Health education and teaching materials for use by groups of young people, peer educators, and those working with youths
  • Educate young men in developing responsibility and decision-making skills in fertility-related behaviours

Recreational programmes

The centre provides a comprehensive range of creative arts and recreational programmes in areas such as:

  • Dance
    • Modern Dance (Tuesdays & Thursdays – 14.00 to 17.00 & Saturdays 9.00 – 12.00)
    • Traditional Dance (Friday- 15.30- 17.00)
    • Drama (Tuesday 16.00-18.00)
 
Peer Counselling Project/Services

The centre provides :

  • Established and coordinated peer counselling project to promote and educate young people in responsible sexual behaviours, decision-making and interpersonal relationships.
  • Educational modules to be used by peer counsellors in their educational activities
  • Training, support and supervision to the peer counselling in developing peer counselling project.
  • Appropriate knowledge and skills required to fulfil their role.

Peer-to-peer counselling (Service d’ écoute) (Tuesdays – 14.30- 16.00 & Thursdays – 15.00 – 17.00)

Access and participation of young people through the Youth caravan

Access and participation of young people in the YCC through their involvement in the management organisation and implementation of activities are encouraged. Young peer educators and leaders are active participants in outreach youth caravan activities
