About Us
The fisheries sector is one the main economic pillars of Rodrigues and is characterized by an open access fishery. However, the increasing pressure on the coastal and marine space comprises the ability to maintain the biodiversity, productivity and to provide a large area of valuable services to Rodrigues.
Fisheries department ensure effective control and surveillance over the lagoon fisheries and marine resources and marine ecosystem and ensuing effective mechanism for off-lagoon fisheries and delivering timely office services to each customer.

Objectives
- Introducing new fishing technologies to artisanal fishers to ensure sustainability of the sector. Technology is a powerful tool to better manage the fisheries sector and to sector and to ensure its resilience. As for the Marine Academy and Research Centre (MARC), it conducts training to fishers on off-lagoon techniques, carries research on fisheries and marine resources and collects statistics on artisanal fishing
- Placing Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in the outer lagoon around the island with a view to increase fish catch
- Ensuring compliance with law and regulations for better protection of the marine resources and ecosystem.
- Consolidating existing regulations for the fisheries sector
- Creating new type of entrepreneurship for the Fisheries Sector in the field of ship building, repair and maintenance
- Providing appropriate infrastructure at Fishing Landing Stations around the island
- Restoring marine ecosystem and biodiversity of the lagoon
- Developing aquaculture based on local marine species
- Appropriate investment in vessels, infrastructure, training and related equipment for the development of fishery
