About Us

Rodrigues Prison has only a sole operated Penal Institution. It is a medium Security Regime. It is located in the Northern Region of our autonomous Island, which is well-Known to all our citizens of our Republic of Mauritius at Pointe-La-Guele. According to our past historic background their penal Institution has opened in 1963. Its topography covered actually an area of sixteen (16) acres of land. The provision of detainee’s population is about seventy (70) male detainees including twelve (12) female.

Rodrigues is an outer island in the Republic of Mauritius. The administration of the Prison here is placed under direct supervision of the Commission for Health, Prison and Others and its technicity is based upon the supervision of the Commissioner of Prisons.

The ethical basis of Prison Management is under the supervision and control of an Assistant Superintendent of Prisons who is in charge of the institutions. A sense of Ethical basis of imprisonment needs to persuade the management style from top to bottom. 

The protection of human rights plays a fundamental role in our operational/tactical and strategic efficiency. The proper behaviour of staff towards the Rodrigues Prison Population is the most of the priorities for respecting Human dignity. Torture and ill-treatment are never being permitted in our institutions.

Objectives

Our main objectives are :

  • To provide a safe and healthy environment for the detainees which is conducive to their rehabilitation and spiritual enhancement and vocational training
  • To facilitate and safeguard ways and means for the detainees’ contact with outside world, i.e. spouse, children, parents and next of kin
  • To provide the necessary structures that will be beneficial for all detainees in terms of education and vocational training
  • To apprise and sensitize the detainees on the ill effects of substance abuse and to empower them so that they may lead a drug-free life

  • To provide the detainees with all the required structures for their mental and physical development through sports and games
  • To continuously upgrade and rethink the existing physical structures of the prison so that they may be congruent with a healthy and peaceful environment

Services Offered

The Prison Service offer a wide range of programs to detainees namely :

Rehabilitative Programs

Rehabilitation has been traditionally emphasised on capacity building of detainees through vocational, spiritual, recreational and educational training. However, its focus should now be on addressing those criminogenic factors which significantly contribute to offending. Our main objectives and philosophy in the Rehabilitation programs at the Rodrigues Prison is that our detainees produce that they consumed and consumed that they produced. With our unique specifities, detainees are involved in the rearing of Layers, Broilers, Pigs and Vegetables are being produced for their own consumption.

Literacy and Numeracy

Literacy and Numeracy session are being carried out by two NGO’s twice a week as well as the presence of moral instructors. But due to the presence of Pandemic of Covid-19 in our autonomous community, we have decided to put aside certain facilities until further orders.

Small Medium Enterprise courses to detainees, courses dispensed by officers from SMI Mauritius on How to Start your own Business”.

Vocational Training

Rodrigues Prison is now occupied with a New Prison Block adjacent to old one which has been constructed. The new building will cater for Remand detainees in the near future and the old one will be for safe custody of Convicted and will be used for vocational Training Centre for Rehabilitation Process. In line with vocational Training, I have to printed out that ten (10) detainees as well as two (02) Prison Officers has followed courses in Bricks by Bricks Courses run by the MITD of Rodrigues in collaboration with “Brick by Brick Projects” of Mauritius.

Visit to Detainees
  • Rodrigues prison is a restricted area, access to the department is strictly forbidden except for prior authorisation
  • Visit for Remand Detainees only on Tuesday and Thursday as from 08hr to 14 hrs 
    • Once a visit per week
  • Visit for convicted detainees only on Monday, Wednesday and Friday as from 08hr to 14hrs
    • Once a visit per fortnight
  • Note:
    1. No visit on Public Holiday
    2. Only three persons per visit
  • Documents to be produced on visit: National Identity Card
