About Us

This section comprises the Licensing Unit and the Legal Metrology Unit.

The Licensing Unit is responsible to promote and facilitate trade and commerce activities in Rodrigues whilst ensuring compliance to the RRA (Licenses) Regulation No. 3 of 2003 and for the delivery of Trade Licenses through the approval of the Licensing Committee.

The Legal Metrology Unit enforces the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act to ensure that weighing and measuring instruments used in trade and the pre-packing of commodities conform to legal requirements.

Vision
  • To promote, facilitate trade activities and to enforce the Rodrigues Regional Assembly (Licences) Regulation No.3 of 2003
  • To enforce legal metrology legislation and investigation of complaints from consumers and traders
Roles and Functions
  • Attend to members of the public and give information about the procedures to be followed in applying Trade Licence and Occasional Licence
    • Advice on type of Trade Licence to apply for
    • Deliver application forms
    • Submit checklist of documents to be produced upon application
  • Process applications for Trade Licence and Occasional Licence
    • Seek policy concurrence for processing of applications (Trade Licence)
    • Seek clearance/recommendation from relevant authorities
    • Conduct joint site visit with authorities when required
    • Submit list of applications (trade Licence) to the Licensing Committee for approval and thereafter to Executive Council
  • Issue and renew Trade Licence
    • Upon approval of the Licensing Committee and/or Executive Council, the Trade Licence is issued against payment of a Licence fee
    • Trade Licences are renewed in the months of January and July
  • Monitoring of stalls and Snacks at Port Mathurin Bus Terminal, Kiosks at Alfred North Coombes, Hawkers at foodcourt and Tuck shops at Mt Limon and Pajerome
    • Ensure that the occupiers abide to the terms and conditions abide to the terms and conditions in the leasing agreements including payment of annual rental fees.
  • Verification of trader’s equipment
    • check if all traders, SME, industrial bodies who use an instrument for the purpose of selling goods with consumers complies with Legal Metrology Act
    • Equipment are assized against the payment of an assizing fee
    • On request assizing; (In situ verification)
  • Inspection of trade premises all around the Island
    • control measuring instrument of traders and to ensure they are in conformity with Legal Metrology Act
    • Inspection performed all throughout the year
    • Provide Information and advice to traders and raise more awareness to use their measuring instrument properly
  • Testing of pre-packed commodities around the island
    • ensure that the packer is filing the exact quantity as mentioned on its package
    • ensure that the net weight and main display panel are both legally respected
    • to sensitize people about Pre-packed commodities regulation
