EMPLOYMENT DIVISION

About Us

The Employment Division operates under the aegis of the Commission for Tourism, Employment, Labour & Industrial Relations, Information Technology and Telecommunications.  The Division is Governed by the Employment and Training Ordinance 1963 and the Employment and Training Act 1982. The National Employment Act was enacted in 2017 which provides for the setting up of a National Employment Department to replace the Employment Service to meet the new challenges of the labour market. Thus the Employment Information centre is actually being restructured. The Employment Division deals with the registration, counselling, placement of jobseekers in employment, work permit, collection and publication of statistics on the labour market, including employment and unemployment, provision of advice on matters related to employment, unemployment and training.

  • To facilitate the employment of jobseeker and to provide them assistance and guaidance with regards to gainful employment
Objectives

The main objectives

  • Facilitate the employment of job seekers and ensure that job seekers are able to find employment that meet their aspirations
  • Provide assistance and guidance with regard to employment prospects, including future employment prospects
  • Promote placement and training of job seekers through approved programmes
  • Provide labour market information on the demand and supply of skills to local employers, job seekers and training institutions
Roles and Functions
  • Registration and placement of jobseekers including the redeployment of laid- off workers
  • Training and placement of jobseekers under the different programmes and through workshops (YEP, ERP, workshops delivered by officers on several themes)
  • Facilitate overseas employment opportunity including circular migration programme
  • Channel jobseekers interested in entrepreneurship to relevant authorities or the PPT programme
  • Supply database on unemployment for statistical purposes
  • To assist jobseekers as regard to online vacancy and Job search (using the IT Corner to apply online when there are vacancies or to effect Job search, e.g, on the website of “Mauritiusjobs” 
Training Programmes
Youth Employment Programme (YEP): This programme has been developed to facilitate the transition of youth from education to employment and to provide them with the core skills required by different sectors of the economy. Application can be done online on the site (http://www.yep.mu).

Employment Relief Programme (ERP): The objective of ERP is to empower jobseekers by providing them with practical and theoretical training through placement with differents Commissions and entrepreneurs, with the aim of converting them into productive labour force. Up to date, about 1290 jobseekers have been trained.

Promoting Entrepreneurship
Plan de Prestation Transitoire (PPT): The aim of the PPT is to offer non-refundable financial assistance and entrepreneurial support to ex-trainees of the Employment Relief Programme (ERP) to enable them to earn a living decently by engaging themselves in an income generating project on small scale industries.
